| Mouse anti Human CD138 antibody, clone rB18-02-5H10, is a recombinant monoclonal antibody that recognizes CD138, also known as Syndecan-1 or SDC-1. CD138 is a member of the transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan family. It is composed of a core protein covalently attached to heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate chains. CD138 is expressed on the surface of plasma cells within the hematopoietic system and on the surface of mature epithelial cells. CD138 acts as an extracellular matrix receptor, involved in many cellular functions, including cell binding, cell signaling and cytoskeletal organization through cell-cell adhesion and cell-matrix adhesion. It can bind to numerous proteins, including integrins and extracellular matrix components. CD138 is also involved in regulating exosome biogenesis, alongside SDCBP and PDCD6IP. The extracellular domain is proteolytically cleaved in a shedding process and deposited in the extracellular matrix where it exerts autocrine and paracrine effects. The CD138 marker is used in flow cytometry to identify normal or malignant plasma cells. CD138 is upregulated in malignant plasma cells and has a causal role in the progression of multiple myeloma (MM). CD138 expression level correlates with MM disease severity and is used an index of the effectiveness of the treatment regimen. |
