| Mouse anti Human C5/C5b antibody, clone 568, recognizes an epitope on C5 and C5b. C5 is a component of all three complement activation pathways (classical, lectin and alternative), with all leading to its cleavage. C5 convertases cleave C5 into the anaphylatoxin C5a and C5b. The creation of C5b initiates the creation of the membrane attack complex (C5b-9) resulting in pathogenic cell lysis. This is achieved through the incorporation of the complex into bacterial cell walls, forming a pore, particularly in gram negative Neisseria strains (Merle et al. 2015). |
