Respiratory Diseases

Overview

Respiratory pathogens cause a myriad of diseases ranging from the common cold to pneumonia. They are divided into upper (URTI) and lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). URTIs infect the nose, sinuses, pharynx, or larynx leading to sore throat, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, and the common cold. These infections are generally viral with some bacterial origins and very rarely fungal or parasite based. LRTIs are most often pneumonia or acute bronchitis. Recent high profile respiratory diseases include the coronavirus zoonoses causing SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID19).

Bacterial infections can generally be treated effectively with antibiotics and these are complemented by antiviral therapies against, for example influenza. However, drug resistance and newly emerging respiratory diseases pose severe challenges to human health and require continued research efforts to develop effective therapies and vaccines.
