Rabbit anti spastin antibody recognizes spastin, also known as spastic paraplegia 4 protein and SPAST.

Spastin is an ATPase which uses energy from ATP hydrolysis to promote microtubule severing. The two spastin isoforms are ubiquitously-expressed but have different subcellular locations (primarily the cytoplasm and endoplasmic reticulum). They appear to work together to promote fission of fubulues from the early sorting endosome (Allison et al. 2019). In addition to severing microtubules, spastin promotes regrowth of microtubules in an ATP-independent way, revealing its function as a dual-microtubule regulator (Kuo et al. 2019). Spastin is involved with remodeling of membrane structures, relevant for neurite branching, axonal growth, midbody abscission, and endosome tubulation (Papadopoulos et al. 2015). Mutations in spastin are a common cause of Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), a group of diseases characterized by spasticity and gait disorders (Arribat et al. 2020).
