    • Mouse anti Kuoda thyrsites, clone 2F4, specifically recognizes an antigen on the surface of the myxospores of Kuoda thyrsites, a histozoic parasite affecting a range of marine teleost fish species. Clone 2F4 is specific for the K.thyrsites and does not recognise the closely related species, K. paniformis or K. crumena (Chase, J.C., et al. 2001)

Kuoda thyrsites is parasite that infects cells and resides intracellularly in the internal muscle fibers of its host. It is responsible for soft flesh syndrome that occurs post mortem in infected individuals, a condition where the myocytes breakdown, known as myoliquefaction (Henning, H.H., et al. 2013). This process is detrimental to the quality of the flesh and significantly effects the market value of the fish.

      K. thyrsites is a particular problem in the aquaculture industry for farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and North American Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) where infections can result in a major economic impact.

It has been demonstrated that there is an inverse correlation between the number of spores and the quality of flesh (Dawson-Coates, J.A., et. al. 2003), clone 2F4 may therefore be of use in detecting K. thyrsites myxospores to assess level of infestation.
