Rabbit anti p53 (pThr18) antibody recognizes the p53 tumor suppressor protein, also known as cellular tumor antigen p53 or NY-CO-13, when phosphorylated at threonine 18. The p53 protein is important in multicellular organisms, where it regulates cell cycle progression to allow DNA repair or apoptosis in the case of irreparably damaged cells and thus functions as a tumor suppressor, involved in preventing cancer (Haupt et al. 2003). Mutations in the p53 gene are found in approximately half the cases of human cancer (Joerger and Fersht 2007).

Phosphorylation of threonine 18 interferes with the binding of p53 to the E3 ubiquitin protein ligase MDM2 (Blanco et al. 2006) promoting the apoptotic effects of p53.
