Leptin (anti-obesity protein) is the product of the ob (obese) gene in mice, and is involved in appetite control. The gene is expressed in adipose tissue, and is thought to be important in the regulation of fat stores. Mice of ob/ob genotype develop a form of diabetes similar to type II (non-insulin dependent) diabetes.
