Infection by G. lamblia results in giardiasis; a type of gastroenteritis that causes severe diarrhea and abdominal cramps. It has been suggested that chronic giardiasis can result in long-term growth retardation.
Does not react with Cryptosporidium and Microsporidia cysts.
