Mouse anti WASL antibody recognizes WAS/WASL-interacting protein family member 1, also known as WIPF1, PRPL-2, WIP. WASL is an important regulator of actin cytoskeleton assembly and remodelling, binding to and stabilizing the actin regulator Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASp) (Ramesh et al. 1997). WASL also interacts with actin directly, an interaction found to be critical for plasticity of the actin cytoskeleton (Keppler et al. 2018). Through its role in actin regulation, it is involved with the activation and proliferation of cells. In its wider role, WASL is a multi-tasking protein within a network of protein-protein interactions (Sokolik et al. 2020). WASL is important for immune responses which depend on cellular functions requiring actin polymerization. Different roles for WASL have been identified in B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. In these cell types, WASL deficiency has different consequences for cell proliferation, activation and function. Mutations in the WASL binding site cause Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) and X-linked thrombocytopenia (XLT) (Noy et al. 2012).
