    • Mouse anti Human S100A7 antibody, clone 1A4 recognizes human Protein S100-A7, also known as psoriasin or S100 calcium-binding protein A7. Psoriasin is a 100 amino acid secreted host defence peptide (Kesting et al. 2010). Host defence peptides (HDPs) are endogenous antimicrobial paptides produced principally by epithelia and up-regulated in inflamed epithlial tissues responding to immunological insult. Psoriasin is a ~11kDa peptide, as shown by Western blotting under reducing conditions.

      HPDs are a large diverse group of peptides produced by a vast array of both invertebrate and vertebrate organisms. In humans many such peptides exist including the defensins and calthecidins, all having innate anti-microbial properties which act as natural antibiotics or modulate the host immune response to microbial invasion. Production of HPDs can be stimulated either directly by microbial products such as endotoxin or by the presence of host pro-inflammatory cytokines.

      S100A7 was first identified in epidermal cells affected by the auto-immune condition psoriasis (Watson et al. 1998). S100A7 is expressed in the nucleus and cytoplasm of basal epidermal cells but is associated with the plasma membrane in spinous epidemal cells. It is markedly over-expressed in psoriatic tissues (Broome et al. 2003).
