Purified Human alpha fetoprotein is a 63 kDa protein which binds copper, nickel, fatty acids, bilirubin and serum albumin. It is expressed mostly during fetal development, existing only at very low levels in healthy adults. Alpha fetoprotein is therefore a useful marker for diseases such as hepatocellular carcinoma, testicular cancer, Downs syndrome and neural tube defects.
