    • Rabbit anti Dog thyroid stimulating hormone polyclonal antibody was raised against highly purified intact canine thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and is specific for canine TSH. Rabbit anti Dog thyroid stimulating hormone exhibits less than 0.1% cross reactivity with the other major canine glycoprotein hormones; growth hormone (GH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) or prolactin using an iodinated hormone tracer assay. This strongly indicates that the anti thyroid stimulating hormone antibody is primarily reactive with the TSHβ chain although it may also have reactivity with β chain conformational epitopes dependent on the presence of the common α chain shared with the other glycoprotein hormones.

      TSH, also known as thyrotropin is synthesized in, and secreted from thyrotropes within the anterior pituitary gland, under the influence of secreted thyrotropin releasing hormone from the hypothalamus. TSH is composed of, as are the other major glycoprotein hormones, a common α chain non-covalently linked to a unique β chain responsible for conferring the stuctural and biological identity of the individual hormone. TSH binds to the TSH receptor (TSHR) in the thyroid gland. TSHR has also bee detected in other cell types including adipocytes, neuronal cells and gastric mucosa.

      Defects in the TSHβ subunit can lead to hypothyroidism, either through the lack of secreted hormone or secretion of TSH lacking full biological acticvity (Szkudlinski et al. 2002).
