CD45 also known as B220, Ly-5 and T200 is a member of the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family with a molecular weight of approximately 220 kDa. The PTP family function as signaling molecules in the regulation of many processes such as cell differentiation, division and development (Kaplan et al.1990). There are many different isotypes of CD45 family, with CD45R being the longest protein and with more glycosylation when expressed on B cell. For further information about CD45 and its isoforms refer to the CD45 mini-review.
CD45R specifically has been shown to be essential in B cell receptor and T cell receptor signaling. It is primarily found on all developmental B cells including: Pro-B cell, Pre-B cell and up to mature B cells but is also found on T cell & NK cell subsets.
