Native cytomegalovirus antigen is derived from the human cytomegalovirus strain AD-169. Cytomegaloviruses are members of the Herpesviridae family and are common in primates and are generally host species specific. The most common cytomegalovirus infecting humans is known as HCMV or human herpesvirus-5 (HHV-5). It may be transmitted from person to person through urine, saliva, breast milk, other bodily fluids and transplanted organs. It is a common infection which mostly passes unnoticed and it is estimated that approximately 60% of the population over the age of 40 and 90% of the population over the age of 80 are infected.

Cytomegalovirus often remains latent in the body but may be activated by changes in the body such as pregnancy, cancer or immunosuppressive diseases. The infection may be dangerous to people who are immunocompromised such as those who are HIV positive or organ transplant recipients. The infection may also be dangerous to pre- and post-natal infants. Anti-viral drugs are useful in the treatment of CMV infection.

This native cytomegalovirus antigen may be used for research into the development of serological assays for the detection of human cytomegalovirus.
