Bio-Rad's custom antibody generation service uses antibody phage display technology to create highly specific, high-affinity recombinant monoclonal antibodies for research, bioanalytical, and diagnostic use—with no animal immunization.
When the specialized antibody you need is not commercially available, our HuCAL® and Pioneer™ Select platforms deliver purified, sequenced antibodies in as little as 4 weeks.
A custom antibody generation service is the right choice whenever no commercial reagent meets your specificity, format, or supply requirements. Common scenarios include:

Generating anti-idiotype antibodies for pharmacokinetic and immunogenicity testing

Developing a custom analytical antibody for a demanding bioanalytical, clinical, or diagnostic assay

Characterizing a novel protein or unique biological product for which no antibody exists

Developing an in vitro diagnostic method where a specific antibody is required

Detecting understudied targets—mutant, low-abundance, or structurally complex proteins in basic research
Not sure if your target fits?
Our specialists will tell you within one conversation.

Antibody phage display is an in vitro technology that screens vast libraries of antibody fragments displayed on the surface of bacteriophages to identify binders against a target antigen.
Because selection happens in a test tube rather than in an animal, the process can be guided toward the exact specificity, affinity, and format you need—even against toxic or non-immunogenic antigens.
With more than 20 years of expertise in antibody phage display, Bio-Rad has been delivering custom antibody generation services using the well-established HuCAL antibody library and the newer Pioneer library.
Share your antigen and application, and our antibody specialists will recommend the right phage display route for your project.
Bio-Rad generates custom antibodies entirely in vitro through a high-throughput phage display workflow, managed end to end by automated systems and dedicated technical experts.
A standard project delivers purified Fab antibodies just 7–8 weeks after antigen receipt, compared with the 4 to 9 months required by conventional monoclonal approaches that rely on animal immunization. A fast-track option is available in some cases, enabling delivery in 4–5 weeks.
Bio-Rad supported us in generating antibodies with fast dissociation kinetics for continuous protein monitoring. From the candidate antibodies, we identified an antibody pair with suitable affinity and kinetic properties for a sandwich-based continuous biosensor. We greatly appreciated Bio-Rad’s expertise, support, and professional services.
In vitro phage display sidesteps the main limitations of animal immunization—speed, animal use, and difficult antigens.
| Criterion | Bio-Rad Antibody Phage Display | Conventional Animal Immunization |
|---|---|---|
| Animal use | No | Yes |
| Antigen type | Toxic antigens, immunosuppressants, non-immunogenic antigens, antigen complexes, and even cell lines | Technical challenges toward toxins and antigen complexes |
| Antigen needed | 0.2–0.5 mg | Several mg |
| Timeline | 7–8 weeks regular · 4–5 weeks fast-track | 4–9 months |
| Flexible formats | Fab (mono- and bivalent), full-length immunoglobulins, many isotypes | No |
| Specificity | In vitro guided selection to desired specificity | Not predictable; extensive screening required |
| Fully human | Yes—Fc from different species available on request | No |
| Technology | CysDisplay/SpyDisplay | Immunization, hybridoma |
| Success rate | >90% | ~75% |
Both Pioneer Select and the HuCAL service use Bio-Rad's phage display expertise and deliver fully human recombinant antibodies. The right choice depends on your specific requirements, timeline, and downstream use.

Our custom antibody services based in Neuried (Munich), Germany, are My Green Lab certified!
Antibody phage display is an in vitro method that screens large libraries of antibody fragments displayed on bacteriophages to identify binders to a target antigen—with no animal immunization required.
With Bio-Rad's phage display service, purified Fab antibodies are typically ready 7–8 weeks after antigen receipt, and a fast-track option can deliver in about 4 weeks.
Bio-Rad has over 20 years of antibody phage display experience. We've successfully delivered over 60,000 custom antibodies in more than 3,000 projects with over 90% success rate. Our HuCAL and Pioneer Select platforms are supported end to end by dedicated technical experts, deliver fully sequenced, non-animal-derived, fully human antibodies in as little as 4 weeks, and offer flexible formats.
0.2–0.5 mg of purified antigen is required for panning. If you have special antigens, such as peptides, oligos, or cells, please consult with our sales specialists.
